(Which teams have a real shot at the BCS title? Frank Beamer's Hokies are among those that fit the historical profile.)
According to Olin Buchanan (?) on rivals.com, the Hokies fit the profile, along with 5 other teams, to be contenders for the National Championship for the 2009 season. The Hokies were whittled down, along with these five other teams, to be contenders based on five criteria which included:
1. Be a Big Six Conference member or Notre Dame (Hokies: ACC)
2. Get at least 8 victories each of the previous season (Hokies: 10, again)
3. Get a winning record in post-October regular-season games (Hokies: 3-1)
4. Return a junior or senior quarterback with starting experience (Hokies: Tyrod, Junior)
5. Return at least six starters from a defense that ranked in the top 20 in scoring defense the previous season (Hokies: 9th in scoring defense, 7 starters)
The other five teams included in this analysis were: Florida, Iowa, Mississippi, Texas, and WVU.
Say what you want about the validity of these analyses, but more and more we're being mentioned to have similarities with teams like Florida, USC and Texas, and that's got to mean something.
