Book it: Red Sox vs. Phillies in 2010 World Series

So apparently the Red Sox have signed John Lackey this fine afternoon, and Roy Hallday and his agent have checked into a Philadelphia hotel.  What does this mean?  Two things.

1.  Barring any major injuries, the Red Sox may have the best rotation in the AL this year with Beckett, Lester, Lackey, Buchholz/Daisuke/Wakefield.

2.  The Phillies will have the best rotation in the NL with Halladay, Lee (maybe, pending the Halladay deal), Hamels, Blanton/Happ/Moyer.

What wins championships?  You got it right.  Pitching.  If these deals go down, sorry, anywhere west of the Mississippi and south of the Mason Dixon line, it's going to be another northeastern Series.

Oh and on another note, who does Jason Bay think he is?  The Sox take you out of the shit hole that is Pittsburgh, and you have the gall to say "The Red Sox don't value me enough"?  The Red Sox brought you into this world and they can sure as hell take you out of it.  Ok maybe not, but a hometown discount is not too ridiculous to ask, seeing as how you would be all but forgotten if he were still in the Pirate "organization".

UPDATE: Looks like Philly moves faster than we thought.  SI.com is reporting that they have a three-way (hehe) deal with Toronto and Seattle, involving the acquisition of Halladay and sending Lee to Seattle.  No word on what Toronto is getting other than shafted.

Lackey
I've never really been impressed by him. And in the last four postseasons he's appeared in he's 1-4 in nine starts. And he's not that great a clubhouse guy. I hope I'm wrong and he does great, but I kind of see this deal backfiring for the Sox.

Not impressed in the sense that he is not a top ace in the league, but as a number 3 pitcher, he is pretty damn impressive, in my opinion.

As for the clubhouse issue, the Sox have weathered Manny, Kurt, and plenty others who are far worse than anything I have heard about Lackey. Plus Beckett seems like an ornery MFer, so if he can make it in the clubhouse without too many issues, I'm sure Lackey will be fine.

There's a difference
between being on ornery mother and just being an ass hole, which is what I've heard about Lackey. Yeah, he's great as a No. 3 pitcher, but five years? I'll be shocked if he sticks around that long or is anywhere near as effective then as he is now.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a baseball player in the MLB who isn't a complete asshole. But that's neither here nor there. If he's bad in five years, we can cross that bridge then. Right now, this is a good move for the Sox, in my opinion, and they didn't have to give up anyone for it, just money. At least they aren't selling their future like some other teams (cough...Pirates...cough).

That's probably why
I can at least live with the deal is that they didn't have to give up anything for Lackey. I'm interested to see how he handles the media pressure in Boston.

And you're definitely right about baseball players. In all my years in baseball I've met only a dozen or so guys who are decent human beings.

Oh I get it, because the Pirates suck? That's so fresh. Did you just think of that? It's because they are so bad right? That's the joke. That is so funny!

I hate you with the fire of a thousand suns... Also, I cried myself to sleep in my Andy Van Slyke jersey last night.

This is an improvement because Lackey made it all the way to the ALCS before losing to the Yankees last year? Congrats.
