Now that the game has been over for oh, about 45 minutes, here are some of my immediate reactions.
- That was a terrible game. Sloppy. Frustrating. Just bad. Our defense and special teams were the only bright spots in that game and even they weren't that great. Granted our defense held them to five field goals and no touchdowns, but still, Helu Jr. made us his bitch. He was ripping off big runs left and right. Luckily we had Ryan Williams make Nebraska his bitch, otherwise this game might have been different.
- Two points on our offense today: the first being if this is how we play Miami next weekend, we are going to get our asses handed to us. Second being this is exhibit 2 in evidence against Bryan Stinespring keeping his job for the year. Ryan Williams saved his ass with his rushing, but Coach Beamer needs to realize that this guy is getting us by by a very thin hair. It won't last very long. We have three plays. Ryan Williams rush, Tyrod Taylor sneak, Danny Coale pass. That's it. If they stop those three plays, we're done. - Tyrod is a very athletic quarterback, and he had 9 carries for -22 yards. Ridiculous. I know you don't want him to get hurt because JuJu Clayton is very green, but come on. Use Tyrod for his strengths. Let him rip some yards off on his feet. You stop him from running and you severely limit our offense.
- Our special teams is staying strong. I recently had been getting frustrated with all the TV talking heads saying how we are great at special teams and just using that as a given. In the meantime, we hadn't been doing much with our ST, and if anything they had been average. That has changed this season. Large returns and great placement by Bowden. you only talk about kickers when they screw up, and I almost forgot Matt Waldron's name. That's a good thing. - We gave up way too many yards on penalties today. I thought we had outgrown that last week, but I guess I was wrong. Luckily for us, Nebraska didn't want to stick with the field position they were given, on numerous occasions, because they shit the bed at the end in terms of penalties. And it saved our asses.
- Overall, the game probably induced several heart attacks in and around Blacksburg today, and that is due to our anemic and predictable offense. We are not going to be able to do great things with this offense until certain problems are fixed. These include (but are not limited to): play choices, wide receiver focus, offensive line concentration, and keeping the defense on their heels. While we (along with everyone else) thinks many of these problems start with Bryan Stinespring, they are not all his fault. But our offensive coaches need to get their heads out of their asses and realize they are in charge of our Virginia Tech Hokies. They hold the reins to the machine that countless of Virginia Tech alumni and fans devote autumn Saturdays to year after year. Prove that you know we're worth it. Prove that you know you care about this team as much as we do. Prove that your heart and soul are in it. Prove that we are not putting our faith in men who are there to just collect a paycheck until they can move on to a higher coaching job with another team. It's still early in the season and we are not even close to being "out of it". Don't just get by every week. Don't settle with our offense "not losing" the game. Ok, I'm rambling now.
Bottom line is that we won at home against Nebraska. But it doesn't feel like a win we deserved. I don't like this feeling. Not from a home game. Next week I don't want Miami to be able to catch their breath. I want them to leave Blacksburg wondering what the hell just hit them.
