It's finally here.  The Sweet and Savory 16.  Getcha popcorn ready, because it could get wild.

---------------------------------------

FRUIT REGION

1 Apples vs 13 Watermelon

Holy shit!  Watermelon has an axe to grind.  A 13-seed all the way into the Sweet and Savory 16?  Dayum.  But this looks like the end of the road for watermelon, because I don't know how they can honestly get past apples.  I mean watermelon is good and all, but better than apples?  I think not.  But then again, apples only beat peaches by 7 votes while watermelon beat grapes by 5, so it really is anyones game here.

---------------------------------------

2 Bananas vs 3 Strawberries

This is a tough matchup.  I have both of these fruits in my lunch bag today.  Bananas have the length, but strawberries have the juice.  Two fun facts about these opponents:  banana trees only live one season, just enough to put one bunch of bananas out, and then they die.  Strawberries are actually "accessory fruits"  meaning that the fleshy part is not derived from the ovary, but merely a receptacle for the ovary.  What does this mean?  Well the "seeds" of the strawberry are in reality (or biologically) the actual fruit.  So when you eat a strawberry, you're eating tens (hundreds?) of individual fruits. Ok, nerd time is over.

---------------------------------------

MEAT REGION

1 Beef vs 5 Pork

This is a really tough contest here.  The all-American beef versus the should-be all-American pork.  Fuck swine flu.  Pork is the bee's knees.  Beef needs no talking up.  It's fucking beef.  Not much I could or really should say here.  It's a battle to the death.  Delicious, delicious death.  Loser gets grilled.

---------------------------------------

3 Lobster vs 7 Turkey

Well I think we all saw this coming.  Turkey beat up on chicken.  Lobster barely beat salmon.  Lobster won the seafood battle while turkey won the poultry battle.  And rightly so.  These two meats are awesome.  Though, I think lobster will have a very hard time with turkey this round.  Something about a mascot or something.  Who knows.  GOBBLE GOBBLE, BITCHES.

---------------------------------------

VEGETABLE REGION

1 Tomatoes vs 4 Peppers

Tomatoes could be the number 1 overall seed in this tournament.  This could give peppers a tough time.  But the pepper supporters are coming out in force lately.  Tomatoes beat cucumbers 16-10 while peppers crushed carrots 18-7.  This could be a tough matchup for tomatoes, but they aren't a number 1 seed for nothing.

---------------------------------------

2 Corn vs 3 Potato

Chalkity Chalk Chalk.  Native Americans versus the Irish.  Classic culture war.  Both have become staples of the American diet, corn, arguably, moreso than potatoes, but not for lack of trying.  This matchup will settle it once and for all.

---------------------------------------

CHEESE REGION

1 Cheddar vs 4 Mozzarella

Provolone didn't stand a chance against cheddar.  As a matter of fact, nothing stood a chance against cheddar.  Until mozzarella.  Both contestants crushed their previous-round opponents.  Now they fight to the death for us like dairy-based gladiators.

---------------------------------------

6 Parmesan vs 7 Monterey Jack

This one baffles me.  I mean these two cheeses are good and all, but beating out both American and Swiss?  Damn.   We must have some communists who read this site.  How could you vote out American cheese?  I don't get it, but then again, I just put this together.  True democracy in action.  American and Swiss have been shamed.  They will now hide themselves in a sandwich to be "taken care of".

---------------------------------------

OK, so the Sweet and Savory 16 is almost done.  Next week we will take on the top 8.  And then we move on to later crowning the best food EVER.  Have a great weekend.
