We don’t hate Boise State because of their blue field (though it is a little “look at me!”-ish) or because they pulled the crazy upset on Oklahoma a few years ago with the trick play.  No, no, we don’t hate them for that.  We hate them because 1. They’re good, and 2.  They refuse to prove it.

Listen, taking on a top ten team in VT this year is commendable.  But even if they beat us then they are basically on cruise control for the rest of the season.  An article on ESPN by Mark Schlabach says this:

If Boise State can knock off the Hokies in what is essentially a road game, there will be only one remaining major hurdle in its quest for an elusive spot in the BCS National Championship Game. The Broncos host Oregon State on the blue turf at Bronco Stadium on Sept. 25.

Seriously?  They have to get through two games in the first month of the season and then they are basically assured a position in the race for the BCS Championship?  Shenanigans.  Shenanigans.  Shenanigans.  Shenanigans a thousand times.

Can you say double-standard?

ESPN -
The biggest game of opening weekend also happens to the final one. With a victory over Virginia Tech, Boise State could cement itself as a BCS title contender. The Hokies would be well on their way if they did the same.

Well, if that doesn’t speak volumes…

We know that Boise State is good.  Real good.  I mean they scare me pretty well.  But I’m sick and tired of year in year out hearing about them getting shortchanged about the BCS Championship.  Now I know it’s not their fault for college football not having a playoff system and they want to have an easy schedule just like every other team, but frontloading your schedule with only two teams in the Top 25 is a little ridiculous.

Most teams that are in the running for the BCS bowls each year usually have a bitter rival around the week of Thanksgiving that they must get through to preserve their season.  They also have to battle almost every week to get those wins.  Who does Boise State play during Rivals Week?  Nevada.

I don’t begrudge Boise State for doing what they can to win and have a great schedule each year, but you need to lay off the calls for a BCS Championship every year until you actually prove yourself in the regular season.  Not in the first week when you’ve had all summer to prepare for that team.  Not in a bowl game where you’ve had almost a month to prepare for that team, but during the season, when you can’t take several weeks to focus on one team, because you have to focus each week on the team ahead.  And forgive me for saying this, WAC teams, but Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, Utah State, San Jose State, Nevada, Hawaii, etc.  do not qualify as teams that need much preparation.

Take a look at the schedule for Boise State last year:  http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/schedule/_/id/68/year/2009/boise-state-broncos

A couple things of note here:  1. They played two ranked teams, which they beat, in the first and last games of the entire season.  Those were the only two games where they scored less than 20 points.  They had ten games where they scored more than 40 points the rest of the season.  Now when comparing these scores, does it look like Boise State is really that good, or is it more that they play shitty teams and bookend their schedule with good teams that they (relatively) barely beat?

I’m not trying to be just like every of ass that complains that Boise State doesn’t play anyone and therefore they aren’t good.  I think they are really good.  But beating one or two ranked opponents each year by a relatively marginal amount after having several weeks to prepare for that individual team does not prove anything.   Do it in the middle of the season and schedule harder opponents.

Want to complain about how you are scheduling harder out of conference opponents than most teams in the ACC/SEC/Big 10?  Change conferences.  We have to play much harder in-conference teams than you do, and most times, they are ranked or have been ranked at some point in the season.  Not in the WAC.  So move over to the PAC 10, or hell, the Big 10, everyone else is doing it.  Then, and only then, will you have a right to complain about not getting a BCS Championship bid with an undefeated season.

Listen Boise State, you may beat us (you won’t) but that still doesn’t prove anything.  Just like us beating you won’t prove anything.  We have to get through the rest of the season first.  But unlike you, we have other teams that are good on our schedule that could cause us problems.

The world wants to like you Boise State.  Everyone loves the Cinderella.  But when Cinderella is bitching and moaning about everyone being unfair each and every year without doing a damn thing to fix the problem, Cinderella starts to remind us of Lindsay Lohan.  And no one wants that anymore.  So for that, we hate you Boise State.  We hate you with the fire of a thousand suns.

You know, on second thought, your blue field looks like shit.  We hate that too.
